The Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has swung into action over the fire disaster that gutted AfriLand Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, on September 16, 2025.
The inferno, which claimed several lives, including that of Mrs. Ndidi Osaemedike-Okeke, a lawyer and member of the association has now triggered an independent investigation by the NBA.
In a statement signed by its Branch Chairman, Mrs. Uchenna Ogunedo-Akingbade, the association said it has set up a panel of inquiry to dig into the circumstances of the fire, check whether safety standards were followed, and recommend ways to prevent a repeat of such tragedy.
“The panel will probe the circumstances surrounding the fire, assess compliance with safety standards, and make recommendations to prevent future occurrences,” the statement noted.
The inquiry team is chaired by Nonso Azih, with Vivian Okoh-Olutunfese as Alternate Chair, and Dan Whisky as Secretary. Other members are Theophilus Alao, Maduka Onwukeme, and Fola Akintunde.
Akingbade expressed hope that the panel’s findings would promote accountability and improve public safety. “We look forward to their findings and recommendations,” she said.
