The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, has thrown its weight behind the ongoing public interest litigation instituted by the National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association and its Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL) against what it described as “oppressive” and “extortionate” policies of the Nigeria Police.

At its September monthly meeting held on Monday, September 8, 2025, members of the branch unanimously adopted resolutions commending the bold steps of the NBA President, the National Executive Council, and SPIDEL in challenging the enforcement of fees on the Vehicle Tinted Permit and the controversial Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR).

The Branch, in a letter addressed to the NBA President and signed by its Secretary, Ayodeji O. Olabiwonnu, noted that the imposition of such levies amounted to an attempt to foist an unjust burden on already distressed vehicle owners. It pledged “unwavering support” to the national leadership in prosecuting the legal battle, stressing that it was a noble fight for justice in the public interest.

“The Branch stands ready to deploy all necessary resources to bolster the National Executive and SPIDEL in this cause,” the letter stated.

On another issue, the NBA Ikeja Branch expressed strong dissatisfaction over what it termed “classist tendencies” witnessed at the UNBARRED event during the 2025 Annual General Conference in Enugu.

According to the lawyers, the creation of a barricaded VIP section at the popular event not only undermined the very essence of the programme but also eroded the cherished spirit of collegiality that had made UNBARRED a major attraction, particularly for young lawyers.

“The singular idea behind UNBARRED has always been free mingling among colleagues, irrespective of status or age at the Bar. Sadly, this tradition was broken,” the communiqué lamented.

The Branch therefore called on the NBA President to mandate the newly inaugurated Conference Planning Committee to “uproot such segregationist tendencies” in future editions, insisting that inclusion, fellowship, and egalitarianism must remain the hallmark of the event.

The resolutions have since been conveyed to the NBA President, with the Ikeja Branch expressing confidence that they will receive due consideration and action.
