NBA Ikeja Branch and BCPG Unite to Present Advocacy Programme: “BUILDING COLLAPSE AND APPLICATION OF PUNITIVE LAWS IN LAGOS STATE”

Ikeja, Lagos State — October 21, 2023 — The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG)is proud to announce an impactful collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association Ikeja Branch for an advocacy programme titled “Building Collapse and Application of Punitive Laws in Lagos State.” This event will take place on Wednesday, 25th October 2023, at 10:00 am at the Bar Centre, Ikeja High Court, Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja, Lagos State.

Building collapses remain a significant issue in Lagos State, resulting in tragic loss of life, property, and economic resources. To address this ongoing concern, the Building Collapse Prevention Guild and the Nigerian Bar Association Ikeja Branch are joining forces to hold an advocacy programme to address pertinent issues.

The Advocacy Programme will feature a series of informative and engaging discussions designed to raise awareness and promote legislative changes for building safety in Lagos State. Keynote Speaker, Femi Falana, renowned human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, will set the tone for the discussions. He will be joined by a distinguished panel of experts, including:

1. Dr. Olawale Banmore: Managing Director of Staco Insurance.
2. Arc. Gbolahan Oki: General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).
3. QS Ayuba Akere: Chairman of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN). Lagos State Chapter.
4. Dr. Bamidele Onalaja: Chairman of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), Lagos State Chapter.

These panelists, among others, will share their insights, experiences, and recommendations to address the pressing issue of building collapses in Lagos State. The event will focus on:

1. Legal Frameworks and Enforcement: Learn about the current state of punitive laws related to building collapses in Lagos State and explore ways to strengthen them for effective enforcement.

5. Advocacy and Action: Collaborate with legal professionals and advocacy groups to formulate actionable strategies and recommendations for legal reforms and enforcement.
