The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the assault on a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, by security operatives in Anambra State, describing the act as “inhumane” and demanding the prosecution of those involved.

In a statement signed by its President, Afam Osigwe, SAN, and National Secretary, Mobolaji Ojibara, the NBA described the incident as “a direct violation of her dignity and fundamental human rights” and denounced it as “barbaric treatment.”

The association commended the Anambra State Government for swiftly identifying and arresting the operatives responsible, noting that the prompt action demonstrated commendable responsiveness to public outrage.

“However, accountability must not stop at arrest. The perpetrators must be diligently prosecuted in accordance with the law. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done — both as redress for Ms. Elobor and as deterrence against similar abuses in the future,” the statement read.

A viral video on Monday showed armed operatives of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, assaulting and stripping the corps member in Oba community, Anambra State. Despite presenting her NYSC identification card and pleading her innocence, the operatives accused Elobor and other corps members of fraud.

The disturbing video sparked widespread condemnation from Nigerians, the NYSC, politicians, and civil society organisations. On Tuesday, the Anambra State Government confirmed the arrest of the culprits and announced that investigations were underway.

The NBA stressed that the incident underscored the urgent need for proper training, reorientation, and continuous capacity-building for security operatives.

“Respect for human rights, professionalism, and restraint must guide their conduct at all times,” the statement added.

The association further urged the Anambra State Government to put mechanisms in place to prevent similar violations and to reassure citizens that security agencies will not be turned into instruments of abuse.

The NBA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for Jennifer Elobor.
