A 55-year-old man, Adegbenro Adekunle, on Thursday, appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, over alleged N1.3 million fraud.

The defendant whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretense and stealing. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Adegeshin Famuyiwa, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between March and April 14, at No.152, Isawo road, opposite A1 filling station Agric, Ikorodu.

He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N1.3 million from a complainant, one Mrs. Adeola Adebimpe, with a promise to help her secure a Canadian visa.

Famuyiwa alleged that the representation was false as the defendant never secured the visa for the complainant, but converted the money to his personal use.

The offences contravene the provisions of section 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr. O.A. Ogbe, granted the defendant bail in the the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. The court ordered that the sureties must provide evidence of three years tax clearance. He adjourned the case until Jan 15, 2026 for mention. -NAN
