Operatives of the Zone 2 Command in Lagos have detained a 57-year-old tenant, Oluwaseun Bamisile, who has been hauled before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court.

He stands accused of issuing two worthless cheques amounting to N9,150,000 to his landlord, AEQUITAS PARTNERS, as a partial payment for rent arrears allegedly spanning five years.

Police reports indicate that the landlord’s attempts to cash the cheques were thwarted when the bank rejected them due to insufficient funds in Bamisile’s accounts.

The landlord, frustrated by the situation, lodged a formal complaint with the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, who heads the Zone 2 Command in Lagos.

Acting swiftly, AIG Fayoade instructed his team to apprehend the tenant.

An investigation spearheaded by ASP Martins Dagan and his squad led to Bamisile’s appearance before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, housed at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, where he faces a two-count charge related to issuing dud cheques.

In court, Police Prosecuting Counsel Reuben Solomon outlined that the alleged offences took place on November 9, 2020, and November 6, 2024, at Bamisile’s home in Eleganza Gardens, opposite Victoria Gardens City, Lagos.

Solomon detailed that the tenant, burdened by roughly five years of unpaid rent, issued a cheque from Access Bank for N1,250,000 and another from Stanbic IBTC Bank for N7,900,000—totaling N9,150,000—as a partial settlement.

Despite this, he knowingly lacked the funds to back these payments. When the landlord presented the cheques, the bank declined to process them, triggering Bamisile’s arrest.

Solomon emphasized that these actions violate Section 321(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Bamisile pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Mrs. Wahab set his bail at N1,000,000, stipulating that he provide two sureties matching that amount.

The case was adjourned to July 27, 2025, for further mention, with the magistrate ordering Bamisile’s detention at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility until he meets the bail conditions.
