The Lagos State Task Force has arrested 32 street urchins for allegedly causing nuisance and obstructing traffic on major highways across the state.
The suspects were picked up during a coordinated enforcement operation carried out across the Island and Mainland areas of Lagos following complaints from residents.
In a statement signed by the Task Force spokesperson, Raheem Gbadeyan, the operation was part of the agency’s ongoing clean-up exercise aimed at restoring order on the roads.
Areas covered during the raid included Apongbon, Fadeyi, Jibowu, Yaba Phase 1, Lagos Island, Palmgrove, Ojuelegba and Surulere, among others.
According to the statement, the suspects were caught unlawfully stopping articulated vehicles such as petroleum tankers, trailers, lorries, trucks and private cars, thereby obstructing free flow of traffic.
“During the operation, 32 suspects were apprehended for constituting public nuisance, illegal road obstruction and violating the Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 and the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017,” the Task Force said.
Some of the suspects were also allegedly found smoking substances suspected to be hard drugs and Indian hemp.
Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the agency would not relent in its efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and restore sanity on Lagos roads.
“We will continue to comb every nook and cranny of Lagos to ensure public safety and eliminate undesirable activities on our highways,” Akerele stated.
He added that normalcy had been restored to the affected areas, while the suspects have been charged to court.
