A 26-year-old Kaduna dry cleaner, Richard Akanbi, was on Wednesday docked for allegedly selling his customers’ clothes worth N560,000 and lying that they were stolen by thieves who burgled his shop.
Akanbi who was docked in a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court was charged with breach of trust.
The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 14, at Maraba Rido Kaduna.
Leo said the complainant, Linda Gabriel, entrusted 18 clothes valued at N560,000 to the defendant to wash for her but he dishonestly sold the said clothes and and converted the money to his personal use.
“When the complainant came to collect her clothes, the defendant lied that his shop was burgled and the clothes were stolen.
“The defendant was arrested when the complainant reported the matter at the police station and he confessed to have sold the clothes to solve some personal needs,” the prosecutor said.
He said the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties that must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
Emmanuel said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Kaduna State.
H e adjourned the case until Aug. 21 for hearing.(NAN)
