Onitsha – Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, former lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has outlined what he described as a strategic roadmap that could support ongoing efforts toward securing Kanu’s release.
In a statement titled “When Strategy Must Replace Showmanship – The Immediate Blueprint for Securing Kanu’s Release,” Ejiofor said the situation surrounding Kanu’s continued detention required a careful blend of legal expertise, political engagement, and coordinated intervention.
Ejiofor noted that heightened emotions and widespread commentary around the case made it necessary to refocus public attention on structured efforts rather than public exchanges or speculation.
He proposed the following steps as part of his recommended approach:
Visit to Kanu in Custody
Ejiofor said the first step should be a joint visit to Kanu by legal and political stakeholders to obtain his mandate and agree on a unified strategy. According to him, such alignment was essential before any further legal or political moves are made.
Assembly of a High-Level Legal Team
He called for the formation of what he described as a “formidable team of legal luminaries,” emphasising that the case should be handled by experienced professionals, particularly as it enters sensitive appellate stages.
“This is not the season for theatrics,” he said, stressing that the legal team should comprise individuals with extensive experience in complex constitutional and appellate matters.
Coordinated Political Engagement
Ejiofor also urged influential political figures, especially from the South East, to work together discreetly to explore possible political solutions. He said individuals with national influence and credibility should be involved in the discussions.
He refrained from naming specific individuals but emphasised the need for trusted and respected leaders to spearhead the engagement process.
Discreet Dialogue with the Federal Government
Ejiofor argued that meaningful engagement with the Federal Government should follow the initial consultations with Kanu, with the objective of exploring “pragmatic and plausible” political resolutions. He cautioned that filing appeals without prior groundwork could be counterproductive.
Calls for Calm and Disciplined Advocacy
Ejiofor appealed for restraint in public commentary surrounding the case, urging supporters to avoid actions or statements that could complicate the legal or political efforts underway.
He cautioned against opportunism, noting that the process required minimal publicity and careful handling due to its sensitivity.
Despite current challenges, Ejiofor expressed optimism that a coordinated and disciplined approach could ultimately lead to a positive outcome for Kanu.
