The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared a former Abia State Commissioner, Christopher Enweremadu, and one Fortune Ozoemela wanted over what the anti-graft agency described as a web of conspiracy, theft, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, announced the manhunt in a statement released Wednesday, September 3, on the Commission’s website.

Enweremadu, who once served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters under ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, was fingered in the management of billions of naira meant for Abia’s 17 local government councils. His last known address was the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Umuahia.

Ozoemela, 40, identified as a native of Abia, was last traced to Amakama Olokoro, Umuahia. The EFCC urged Nigerians with information on their whereabouts to report to its offices across the federation.

The fresh move comes months after a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja ordered a probe into Abia’s local government allocations between 2019 and 2023. The court had directed the EFCC to dig into the books and, in a sweeping order, seized the international passports of Enweremadu, his former aide Erondu Uchenna Erondu, and Joy Nwanju, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry.

The probe was triggered by an activist’s petition alleging that billions meant for grassroots development in Abia were siphoned under the watch of top officials.
