A High Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has ordered social media critic Chika Nwoba to pay N5 million in damages to legal practitioner Barrister Ugadu Chinedu for posting defamatory content on Facebook.
The suit, marked HAB/75/2024, alleged that Nwoba published defamatory materials against Barrister Chinedu between 2024 and 2025.
Presiding judge Justice Franklin Edem ruled that Nwoba was guilty of defamation, stating that posts made on 15 June 2024, 18 September 2024, 18 February 2025, and 17 July 2025 were defamatory.
The court ordered:
Nwoba to pay N5,000,000 as general and aggravated damages.
A perpetual injunction restraining Nwoba and his associates from making further defamatory publications against Barrister Chinedu on any media platform.
A retraction and apology to be published on Nwoba’s Facebook page for seven consecutive days within 30 days from the judgment date.
The judgment serves as a warning against the use of social media to spread false and harmful statements.
