Over the years, there has been a remarkable shift in the position of women — women are no longer struggling to have a voice; women are now the voice. The real question today is not about empowerment, but about sustenance — how to juggle multiple responsibilities and still remain healthy, alive, and fulfilled.

I highlighted three major factors that often push lawyers toward self-destruction:

  1. The Clamour for Excellence:
From our early training, we were told to burn the midnight candle. Many of us hardly sleep. Now, science and experience tell us that we need at least 7–8 hours of rest daily to function optimally. The tension between drive and rest is real.
  2. The Need for Validation:
Many lawyers tie their sense of worth to external approval — from clients, colleagues, or society. This endless chase often drains the soul.
  3. Stiff Competition:
With over ten thousand new lawyers called to the Bar this year alone, the competition has never been fiercer. This pressure keeps many on edge, constantly comparing and overexerting themselves.

But how can we practice self-care as lawyers?

  1. Take it easy. Reduce your commitments and specialise. You don’t have to be everywhere or do everything.
  2. Be kind — to yourself and to your colleagues.
  3. Delegate. Empower others to handle tasks. You are not superhuman.
  4. Don’t live in isolation. Cultivate a peaceful and supportive family or social circle. Family is that sacred unit that sees you at your worst and still loves you. Allow people to show you love — don’t build a wall around yourself.

Finally, we must confront the truth: until we shore up our remuneration, many lawyers will continue merely to survive rather than thrive. True self-care is incomplete when the pocket is empty — because certain comforts, rest, and wellness are sustained by economic stability.
