The Presidency has issued an official apology after mistakenly listing two prominent pro-democracy figures, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Dr. Edwin Madunagu, under the posthumous award category during the Democracy Day address by President Bola Tinubu at the National Assembly.

The correction was announced in a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, who acknowledged the error and clarified that both individuals are alive and well.

“Both distinguished individuals are very much alive and, therefore, should not have appeared in the posthumous category,” Onanuga stated.

He assured the public that the necessary adjustments would be made across all State House digital platforms.

The gaffe occurred during President Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech, in which he honoured several individuals for their roles in the nation’s struggle for democratic governance.

The mistake quickly drew attention, given the respected stature of Fasoranti, a leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, and Madunagu, a veteran journalist and Marxist intellectual.

The Presidency’s swift response appears aimed at preventing potential backlash over the handling of national honours and to maintain the dignity of the recognition process.

Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the 1993 presidential election believed to be the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, and honours those who contributed to the nation’s return to civilian rule.
