A Magistrates’ Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver who was behind the wheel when former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and members of his entourage were involved in a road accident.
Kayode was released on bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, while the court fixed 25 February 2026 for continuation of proceedings.
The 46-year-old is facing prosecution over the crash that led to the deaths of Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.
Kayode was first arraigned on 2 January before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, where he was charged on four counts. The charges include dangerous driving resulting in death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care causing bodily harm and property damage, as well as operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.
The alleged offences are said to contravene provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
During proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Nijiwe Richard, requested an adjournment to allow the case file to be forwarded to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s office, through the Department of Public Prosecutions, for legal advice.
The defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the request, informing the court that the defence was prepared to proceed. However, the magistrate upheld the prosecution’s application and adjourned the matter to the new date.
The accident occurred on 29 December 2025 along the Lagos–Ibadan Motorway, when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, Kayode and the two aides crashed into a stationary truck. While Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, Ayodele and Ghami died at the scene.
Joshua was later discharged from hospital after being certified medically fit and subsequently visited a Lagos funeral home with his mother to pay tribute to his late aides before their remains were flown to the United Kingdom.
Funeral prayers for Ayodele and Ghami were held on 4 January 2026 at the London Central Mosque, as tributes continued to pour in from across the global boxing community.
