Court orders Kano govt pay N30B to owners of demolished shops

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has ordered Kano State Government to pay the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners N30 Billion compensation.

Justice Simon Amobeda, who gave the ruling on Friday said the action of Governor Abba Yusuf and his government against the shop owners was barbaric and unconstitutional, reports Justice Watch News.

Governor Yusuf on assumption of office in late May ordered the demolition of shops, malls and a hotel, saying they violated Kano’s masterplan.

In mid-June, he demolished the symbolic “Tumbin Giwa” roundabout along State Road by Government House.

The architectural design of the popular roundabout has become a symbol of Kano state in the media and entertainment industry in the last few years, under his predecessor Abdullahi Ganduje.

A three-storey complex with 90 shops near the Nasarawa GRA, the three-star Daula Hotel reconstructed by the Abdullahi Ganduje administration under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement, a building at the Hajj Camp, and a complex of shops at the Kantin Kwari textile market were all demolished.

Also demolished were shops built by the fence of Sani Abacha Stadium at Kofar Mata, GSS Kofar Nasarawa as well as buildings by GGSS Dukawuya, Goron Dutse.
