Court jails man for Google account impersonation

Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday,  convicted and sentenced a man, Imran Mujeeb Ayomide, to one year imprisonment for fraudulent impersonation.

Ayomide was arraigned by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge relating to cyber fraud.

According to the charge, Ayomide fraudulently impersonated one Agent Julie Ann Andrews Irs by presenting himself as such on a Google account in August 2025, with intent to gain personal advantage. The offence contravenes Section 22(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, and is punishable under the same.

Upon being arraigned, the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

In response, EFCC counsel N. C. Mutfwang reviewed the facts of the case and presented evidence, including the defendant’s statements and a mobile phone recovered during the investigation.

Following the plea and presentation of evidence, Justice Osiagor convicted and sentenced Ayomide to one year imprisonment, with an option of a ₦120,000 fine. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of a Samsung S10 mobile phone to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
