Aide queries continued detention as El-Rufai awaits arraignment

Nasir Ahmed el Rufai 2023

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has not received any response from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission regarding his bail application.

This according to his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye.

El-Rufai presented himself at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on 16 February following an invitation. He was held there until 18 February before being transferred to the ICPC.

In a statement posted on X, Adekeye said the former governor had now spent eight days in custody.

“Today marks eight days since Malam Nasir El-Rufai was detained. He voluntarily reported at the EFCC in the morning of Monday, 16th February 2026 in response to an invitation. He has been held since,” Adekeye wrote.

He added that lawyers representing El-Rufai had neither received a reply to their bail request nor been shown any remand order.

“As at today, his lawyers have not received any response from the ICPC to their application for bail; and they have not been shown any remand order as the 48-hour window for holding a person without charge has expired,” he stated.

El-Rufai is expected to be arraigned on 25 February over charges filed by the Department of State Services. On the same day, the Federal Capital Territory High Court will hear his fundamental rights suit against the Federal Government, the ICPC, the EFCC and the DSS, in which he is seeking to be admitted to bail.

Adekeye further disclosed that the ICPC searched El-Rufai’s residence on Aso Drive, an action his lawyer, Ubong Akpan, described as “unlawful and a clear violation of legal procedures and fundamental rights”.

Akpan argued that the warrant used for the search was defective, while Adekeye said a separate suit had been filed challenging its validity and seeking to bar the use of any seized items in court proceedings.
