Afam O. Okeke, Esq. Reflects on Body of Benchers Lecture on Reforms, Future of Legal Profession

Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Abuja Branch (Unity Bar), Afam O. Okeke, has reflected on his participation at the 2nd Annual Lecture of the Body of Benchers, held on the 5th of March, 2026 describing the gathering as an engaging platform for interaction with leaders of the Bench and Bar.

Mr. Okeke said the event also featured the presentation of the report of the Directions of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, an important component of the Body’s role in maintaining discipline and ethical standards within the legal profession.

He noted that the lecture provided an opportunity to interact with several respected colleagues, leaders, mentors and role models within the profession, including revered traditional ruler and Life Bencher, A. Akpomudje, SAN, who serves as Vice Chairman of the Body of Benchers.

According to him, the lecture delivered by Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, was intellectually robust and engaging.

The lecture was delivered on the theme “Reimagining the Nigerian Body of Benchers: Functions, Reforms and Prospects.”

The event attracted top figures within the legal profession, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON; the President of the Court of Appeal, Monica Bolna’an Dongban-Mensem; the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN.

Also present were past chairmen of the Body of Benchers, Justices of the Court of Appeal, judges of various jurisdictions, Senior Advocates of Nigeria and other members of the legal profession.
